Promontory Fort - |
In use from the late Bronze Age up to medieval times, Promontory Forts were defensive living areas built on top of headlands and cliffs, as seen here. Their strategic location protected their inhabitants from sea invasion by the steep cliffs. A bank of earth and stones built on the landward side made attack difficult.
There are at least five promontory fort sites on Clare Island, a number of which include the remains of dwellings used by the defending inhabitants.
Dún Cinn Tíre
Bhíodh Dúnta Cinn Tíre in úsáid ó dheireadh na Cré-umhaoise go dtí an mheánaois, agus ba réimsí cosanta cónaithe iad a tógadh ar chinn tíre nó ar aillte, mar a fheictear anseo. Thug a suíomh straitéiseach mar aon leis na haillte géara cosaint do na háititheoirí ó ionradh farraige. Thógtaí carnán talún nó clocha ar thaobh na talún de ionas go mbeadh sé deacair an dún a ionsaí.
Tá ar a laghad cúig shuíomh dún cinn tíre ar Chliara, agus tá fothraigh na dtithe a bhíodh in úsáid ag na háititheoirí le fáil i roinnt acu.
